MCGILL® CAM FOLLOWERS & BEARINGS

McGill® precision bearings are engineered to reduce operating cost and have evolved to meet the needs of an ever-expanding list of industries and applications since the CAMROL® cam-follower bearing was patented in 1905. CAMROL® bearings are now offered in more than 1,400 different combinations and configurations.

In 1937, McGill bearing engineers invented the first needle bearing cam follower and have since made innovations for aerospace and spherical bearings. System uptime and operational efficiencies are the goal, and the robust design unique to McGill bearings plays an important role by easing installation, reducing maintenance, and decreasing equipment downtime.

Even a small amount of dust, water, or other particulate matter contamination can significantly reduce bearing life. Because there are no industry-wide standards for tolerances on cam follower bearings, Regal Rexnord has set its own demanding tolerances and uses statistical process control to help provide cam followers that are manufactured according to these exacting standards. In laboratory testing at Regal, CAMROL bearings last up to 50 times longer than some competitors' products in a variety of laboratory and customer tests.

CAMROL®, TRAKROL®, CAGEROL®, GUIDEROL®, SPHERE-ROL® and other McGill bearings provide operational efficiencies to a wide variety of industrial applications.

TRAKROL® CAM FOLLOWERS

TRAKROL® bearings feature black oxide treated bearing steel. They utilize either a precision ball or tapered roller bearing insert for longer operating life under combination radial and thrust loads. The capacity for combination loads allows the TRAKROL bearing to be available in plain (cylindrical), V-groove, and flanged O.D. in both stud and yoke styles. Small sizes (<3” OD or point diameter) use sealed ball bearing inserts. They also use a NYLAPLATE® seal for additional protection. Stud type configurations utilize a metal end plug seal on the roller face providing a long lasting seal. Both bearing types provide a large internal grease reservoir along with special sealing. This makes TRAKROL bearings an excellent choice where reduced maintenance is required.

CAGEROL® NEEDLE BEARINGS

Empty Heading

CAGEROL® machined race needle bearings are manufactured from bearing quality steel with contoured rollers, when beneficial. This helps reduce end stresses and allows for greater misalignment. The rollers are separated by a steel retainer (cage) to help achieve higher speeds and provide a lubricant reservoir. CAGEROL bearings are constructed with a radial lubrication hole and a groove on the outer raceway. We also offer an optional inner raceway (MI-series) for relubrication through the housing or shaft.

Other options include a variety of seal configurations to either help prevent contaminate entry or contain the lubricant. Depending on your preference, these bearings are available in a wide variety of sizes and options.

Machined Outer Race

Race manufactured from bearing quality steel and hardened to carry heavy dynamic and static loads.

Needle Rollers with End Relief (Most Sizes)

Precision Needle Rollers provide high radial load capabilities in small radial envelope dimension. End relief features help reduce raceway stress when shaft misalignment occurs.

Steel Cage

Welded construction minimizes roller radial play for ease of assembly and provides roller guidance helping to reduce friction. The spacing provided by the retainer contributes to the high speed capabilities and lubricant reservoir within the bearing envelope.

Annular Lubrication Groove

The groove provides a circumferential path to direct lubricant to the hole when lubricating through the housing.

Factory Grease Fill

Sealed CAGEROL bearings are factory lubricated with a medium temperature (-30° to 250°F, -34° to 121C) NLGI 1 grease. Unsealed bearings are packaged with a light oil film as a rust preventative. Contact Application Engineering when application conditions require special lubricants.

Seals

The rubber lip seal is capable of 250°F maximum temperature and is available in several different configurations.

"DS" Matched Bearings - Load Sharing

Where two bearings are installed, load sharing should be encouraged when the distance between is less than the width of one bearing. To accomplish this, it is recommended that the bearings be diametrically matched. The option, when applicable, matches OD and ID tolerances. It also maintains diametrical clearance within 30% of the tolerance range and the radial runout within 20% of the tolerance range. The high point of runout is indicated on the bearing faces. For more information and matching factors please review the engineering section for matched bearings. Matched bearings packaged as sets.

Machined Inner Ring(MI)

Precision ground inner ring provides a hardened raceway for the rollers when used with an unhardened shaft. The ring contains an oil hole and annular groove relubrication of the bearing. It can be used with both CAGEROL and GUIDEROL® bearings. It can also be utilized as a bushing in plain bearing applications.

Grease Options

When requested, standard bearings can be factory filled with customer specified lubricant.

CAM FOLLOWERS FOR THE FOOD AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY

It takes a lot of work for the food and beverage industry to keep supermarket shelves full of snack foods, drinks, meat, and poultry. To make these and other items, producers use equipment that can handle and process large product volumes. These machines operate at a fast pace and can keep up with inventory to supply customer demand. In factories, you will see a continuous flow of product movement. Machines must transport goods accurately and precisely from one location to another.

The same is true in the bottling industry. Machines perform can-necking processes, capping, rotary filling, and case packing. These machines have complex and various component structures working in unison to function as a system.

Cam Followers Keep Components Moving

Cam followers are some of these critical components. They transfer linear motion when transporting products. At the same time, cam followers support the load conditions in the application.

Cam followers are a type of bearing that supports radial load. They have thick outer ring cross-sections. In simplest terms, think of them as wheels on a train operating on a railroad track. Likewise, they operate on a track following a path as it supports the load in the application

Cam followers have two styles:
  • Yoke type This style has a roller assembly installed with a customer supplied rod or pin slightly press-fitted inside the bore, held in place by a clevis-type housing.
  • Stud type The end of the stud type is threaded to a blind hole or a thru-hole secured with a hex nut.

Challenges For Cam Followers In Food And Beverage Production

Food and beverage production exposes cam followers to splashes from liquid product or washdown procedures. This liquid can be high in acidity or PH balance. In addition, food and beverage products may come in to contact with grease used to lubricate the cam followers. Cam followers use H1 best replica rolex watches food grade grease complying with EPA standards.

To eliminate rust or corrosion from occurring, material components should have corrosion resistance.

On the production line, cam followers operate on a continuous cycle. Operators rely on cam followers to last their expected life without disruptions, especially at peak production. Unexpected repair affects bottom line, resulting in costly downtime.

McGill® Cam Followers: The Innovation

McGill® Cam Followers were first introduced in 1935. McGill® Cam Follower’s Corrosion Resistant Engineered Solution (CRES) line is a problem solver for the food and beverage production industry. CRES has a track record of successful performance and a wide range of product offerings.

CRES components are available in stainless steel and lubricated with H1-compliant food-grade grease. CRES seals are constructed with a Lubri-Disc plus which combines with a thrust washer. It also has a rubber lip contact seal that is conformed on both ends, which contours the shape of the flanges. A wiping action along the flange surfaces prevents moisture from entering the bearing.
